Mount Kahuzi was last active at the end of the Pleistocene. At 3,317 metres (10,883 ft) it is the highest peak in the Mitumba Range, which runs along the west shore of Lake Kivu in the Albertine Rift.

The National Park is located in both mountainous and lowland terrain; it is one of the last refuges of the rare species of Eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri). The National park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1980 for its unique biodiversity of rainforest habitat and its eastern lowland gorillas.

The park receives an average annual precipitation of 1,800 millimetres (71 in). The maximum temperature recorded in the area is 18 °C (64 °F) while the minimum is 10.4 °C (50.7 °F).
