Rules and Regulations for Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking
The Rules and Regulations for trekking Eastern Lowland Gorillas at Kahuzi Biega National Park in the eastern Part of DR Congo give you a chance to trek and stay in the presence of the Gorillas comfortably. The Rules and Regulations are designed to protect the gorillas’ health, reduce stress on wild animals and keep visitors safe as they encounter the amazing rare species of Gorillas in their habitat.
The Rules and Regulations for trekking the Gorillas are;
1. You should have a valid Gorilla Trekking Permit. These are obtained through the park authorities or licensed tour operators and offer you a chance to trek the Gorillas in their natural habitat.
2. Travelers interested in trekking the Gorillas should be of 15 years or older and children below are not allowed.
3. Travelers should be healthy to trek the Gorillas hence those with signs of illness i.e cough, flu, fever, contagious disease are not allowed to trek the Gorillas.
4. Trekking the Gorillas is challenging demanding you to be physically fit to navigate the various trails in the forest.
5. To trek the Gorillas, you should be in groups of 8 people and when you meet them, an hour is allowed in their presence.
6. Keep a distance of 7 to 10 meters in the presence of the Gorillas while in their presence taking many photos quietly.
7. While in the presence of the Gorillas, you are not allowed to touch or feed them.
8. While in the presence of the Gorillas, you should avoid direct eye contact & sudden movements as this can sturtle the Gorillas.
9. Avoid speaking loudly while in the presence of the Gorillas so that you reduce on stress.
10. While in the presence of Gorillas, you should avoid flash photography as this can be provocative to the Gorillas.
11. Hand washing/sanitizer. You should wash your hands before trekking the Gorillas to reduce germ transfer.
12. No eating, drinking, or smoking near gorillas: Food or tobacco can attract gorillas and spread germs.
13. Cover coughs/sneezes. Use elbow or mask to avoid spreading airborne droplets.
14. No littering while trekking the Gorillas. Carry all waste out; do not leave rubbish in the park.
15. Stay on trails. Avoid damaging vegetation or habitats.
16. No spitting on vegetation. This contaminates gorilla food and their environment.
17. While trekking Gorillas, you should follow instructions.
18. Security. Treks may be suspended or canceled due to security conditions in the region.
